I had a good friend whose life goal is admirable. The other day, he told me that this goal is drifting away as he ages. Our brief conversation made me reflect on goal setting and its relevance in the world we live in.
Do we really need a SMART goal?
Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relatable, Time-bound. These are the criteria or fairy tales in project management or a proposal prepared by your consultant. It could be really useful if you are working on a linear project which you can tell the rain is going to fall at 11:59 am today. The SMART framework might be better when applied with a short-term goal setting because the only constant is change. If you hold yourself accountable for a long-term goal and you set your goal using this ideal framework, it will make you dwell on your inability to achieve the milestones if hiccups happen.
As the world has become more volatile in the last six months, what we can do is to give ourselves some leeway when we fail to meet the timeline. We are our own project managers. It is fine to be sulky and feel lost when we are…
